Asthma

Asthma is one of the most researched conditions in chiropractic pediatrics. This research indicates that there can be a correlation between the nervous system and respiratory function.

Causes

There can be many different causes of asthma. The most common causes of asthma are spinal subluxations, food allergies (gluten and dairy), vitamin deficiencies, exposure to household chemicals (cleaning chemicals, formaldehyde out gassing from carpet, paint and furniture, indoor mold), outside environmental toxins (automotive exhaust, jet fuel, industrial plant exhaust), and frequent antibiotic use as an infant( the lungs have probiotics or good bacteria too) and Cesarean births.

Chiropractic Care

The diaphragm is the main muscle used in breathing. The diaphragm is controlled by the nerves that exit the spine at C3, C4 and C5. When there is a spinal subluxation at C3, C4 and C5, the diaphragm works with less efficiency.

The upper thoracic spine controls general respiratory function and a subluxation there can impair normal lung function.

Correction of these spinal subluxations can improve nerve function and can have a positive impact on lung function.

Research

The research is published in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research which documents 81 children with asthma who received chiropractic care for two months which resulted in 45% reduction in the number of asthmatic attacks. 31% of the subjects voluntarily chose to decrease their medication.
